Queering Archaeological Practice and the Demystification of Indiana Jones

Season 3, Episode 8 of the Diggin' In Digital Lecture Series at the Peabody Institute for Archaeology. Nov 17, 2021

What does the general public think about archaeology and archaeologist? Probably the work of people with an Indiana Jones-like flare and probably a cis-gender white man. That image is ingrained in western culture and has defined the field for decades. Now, new faces and bodies are starting to be noticed and heard in archaeology. However, these new bodies, different bodies, are still considered to be outside the norm, breaking not only with how archaeologists and archaeology look like, but also in how archaeology is practiced: asking different questions, interpreting the data with an alternative scope, and embracing various methodologies. All these approaches that break with the norm and show alternative interpretations, moving away from binary explanations of the past, are subverting archaeological practice; in other words, they are queering archaeology. Whit this frame in mind, I will explain what queer theory is and how queering archaeology is opening the discipline to alternative ways of doing archaeology and being an archaeologist.

Redefining (my) Archaeological practice trough Queer Lenses

Tuesday, 22 February, 2022 - 17:00 to 18:30 (GMT)

As a discipline, Archaeology is undergoing a self-critical reflection on inclusivity, diversity, multivocality, accessibility, and the acknowledgment of colonialist practices within the field. In addition, archaeologists are considering the impacts of how we practice archaeology, the types of research questions we get to ask, and who is asking them. In that context, I lean into Queer Theory to redefine the way we approach archaeology. From the research approach to the methodology to data interpretation, I reflect on how the future might look, and how this transformation is happening and is pushed by personal histories.
